Alkoholmissbrauch und Kultur

Ich lese gerade in einem Artikel über die Prävalenz psychischer Störungen eine lustige, weil so nüchtern wissenschaftlich formulierte Erklärung dafür, warum amerikanische (und auch andere internationale) Studien höhere Raten von Alkoholmissbrauch fanden als diese deutsche Studie:

Yet, the low prevalence is surprising since alcohol consumption, according to the WHO world drink trends reports, is comparatively high in Germany. An explanation could be the fact that diagnostic criteria focus more on (culturally and socially determined) inadequacy of drinking behaviour than on absolute quantity of consumption. Therefore, as an example, it is easier to qualify for alcohol abuse in the USA where the consumption of 1.5 litres of beer is labelled as ‘binge drinking’ compared to wide parts of the German society, where this amount is consumed several times a week without further negative social consequences. In particular, young people are more likely to receive a diagnosis of alcohol abuse in the USA where drinking in public is illegal until the age of 21 (Germany: 16 years).

Die 12-Monats-Prävalenz beträgt übrigens auch in dieser Studie immer noch 4,1%, d.h. wenn man jeweils das letzte Jahr betrachtet hatten 4,1% der Deutschen die Diagnose Alkoholmissbrauch oder Alkoholabhängigkeit. Nicht eingerechnet die, für die es normal ist ein paar Mal die Woche anderthalb Liter Bier zu trinken …
