When I wrote about divided government being good government, I think I didn’t quite have that kind of addition to the governing Democrats in mind.

I couldn’t figure out if there’s a serious possibility of one of these guys becoming the new chairman of the Energy Committee, but Joe Barton has been the „Ranking Member“, i.e. the leading minority member. It could be really funny if it wasn’t real:

Beyond National Borders on the Internet

Upon happy arrival in Glasgow I had to discover that my favorite news satirist Stephen Colbert cannot be accessed from the UK — wow! Hadn’t expected that he would take making fun of old Great Britain to that level! (actually, of course, this has to do with licensing stuff). I had been tempted to try and use one of the infamous „youtube proxies“, but they never worked for me. Today, through a forum of Colbert fans, I discovered the service „Hotspot Shield“ that actually does.

I’d usually be skeptical of free services like that, but my trust is increased after seeing that the program is also featured by German software site „Chip“. And by that fact that I can see how they make money: by adding ads to videos you watch using them, which I suppose is the de-facto main use for the thing.

By getting rid of the stupid „this content is not available in your country“ notes in youtube and elsewhere, I think this is one important step back to the free web, and to leaving country borders behind you when you log on. At least as long as all content is available in the US…

… und zwar im Jahr 2008, entwickelt von der Züricher Hochschule von für Angewandte Wissenschaft. Kann man in Youtube anschauen, und sich schwindelig werden lassen. Kein Wunder, dass einem die gesegneten Tage des Eyjafjallajökull mit auffallend klarem Himmel begegneten.

Jedenfalls, 93.000 Flüge sind das wohl jeden Tag, immer ca. 10.000 gleichzeitig in der Luft. Hier kann man sie anschauen, jeder gelbe Punkt ist eine Passagiermaschine mit mindestens 100 Menschen:

Zu den lustigsten Youtube-Funden gehören oft gefilmte Kinder. Vielleicht, weil wir dort eher noch glauben was wir sehen? Weil die Gefühle so unmittelbar aus dem Geschehen folgen? Weil sie die ganze Hoffnung der Menschheit in sich tragen? Und ein bisschen auch schon das, was diese Hoffnung zunichte macht?

Wie dem auch sei, hier von mir kürzlich entdeckt drei Kinder auf dem Rücksitz, mit dem verheißungsvollen Titel „Single Ladies Devastation“:

Hier nochmal ein Klassiker der Internet-Kultur, jedem der ihn noch nicht gesehen hat wärmstens zu empfehlen. Wenn ich es richtig deute aus einer Art „Deutschland sucht den Superstar“ der Ukraine, aber um ein vielfaches stilvoller. Eine junge Frau schafft musikalisch begleitet eine Geschichte aus Sand auf einem Projektor. Klingt ein bisschen skurril, ist umwerfend:

Ein wenig schmunzle ich, aber überwiegend freue ich mich: Ein junger Berliner, so berlinerisch wie es nur geht, hat den Veganismus für sich entdeckt, hat eine Internetseite mit guten Rezepten für besondere Anlässe, und einen YouTube-Kochkurs, der mindestens so unterhaltsam wie lehrreich ist. Sogar auf Englisch.
